Sesame Orange Chicken - Method
This Sesame Orange Chicken recipe was originally supposed to be a fried orange chicken meal. It was a busy day at home, I was way behind with everything that needed to get done with work and around the house. My husband had to leave in about 30 minutes to run an errand so I scrapped the orange chicken idea, as I knew breading and frying chicken would take way too long, and came up with this surprisingly AMAZING dish! I hope you enjoy it as much as we did.
Prep, Prep, Prep!
The best advice I can give you about this meal is to prep all of your ingredients before you start cooking anything. It will save you! Everything cooks at about the same time, so preparing all of your ingredients will make this meal super pleasant to make. This is actually a French technique called Mise En Place – it means to “put in place” or to get organized. In the states we call it food prep.
Once all of your ingredients are prepped, it’s time to start cooking. Heat up two large pans. If you have a wok, I recommend using it here. The wok will be for your veggies, and it cooks at high heat. The other pan is for your chicken and will cook at medium heat. You’ll cook both of these ingredients simultaneously. This might sound like you’re patting your head and rubbing your tummy, but you don’t need to fuss with the chicken that much. Other than seasoning the chicken, I usually don’t touch it until after my stir fry veggies are all cooked.
Save the Sauce for Last
You really don’t need to heat up the sauce until the rest of the ingredients are cooked and done. The sauce needs your full attention, whisking continually so it doesn’t burn. It also only takes about 1 minute to cook which makes it an easy last step to do on it’s own. Once your sauce has bubbled and thickens up, pour it over your chicken and vegetable mix. Stir everything together and serve over rice.
