3 Ingredient Berry Syrup

Ditch the maple syrup and try this delicious and frugal substitute.

    Ingredients

    • 1/2 C Frozen Berries
    • 1/2 C Water
    • 1 Pinch of Salt
    • 1 TBS Honey OR 1/4 Banana

    Method

    1

    Add water and banana (if using) into a blender and blend until there are no clumps. Add the frozen berries and blend until desired consistency. I like mine a bit on the chunky side.

    Pour contents into a saucepan. Add the salt.

    Bring to a boil and turn the heat down to medium, making sure to keep a small rolling boil.

    Boil until most of the liquid evaporates giving you a thicker syrup. About 10 minutes.

    Enjoy on waffles, pancakes or even on yogurt.

    Is it just me, or is real maple syrup Super expensive...?

    It’s actually expensive for a good reason. Did you know that to make 1 gallon of real syrup it takes 40 gallons of sap. 40 GALLONS! What?! Did you also know that 1 maple tree produces about 10-20 gallons of sap. No wonder that stuff is so expensive.  So if you don’t have $20 to throw down the next time you want healthy waffles try this berry syrup! It is seriously easy to make and SUPER CHEAP! I get my berries from Costco and one of those bags costs a mere $10. Plus I could make A TON of syrup, as well as a slew of other things. 

    My favorite way to eat this is with real whipped cream - You know, the one in the can, not the tub.

    Don’t let that tub of cool whip fool you. It may look fluffy and taste delicious but it’s actually made up of hydrogenated vegetable oils. If you want the real stuff, stick to the cans. Or better yet, make it yourself with heavy whipping cream. When I am feeling extra productive I’ll do this, but the whipped cream in the cans are just as good for you and are my go to for an easy and satisfying breakfast. They are also cheap when you buy the off brand, and they are made of real cream. Also, there is something so fun about squirting it out of the can onto your pancake…or mouth. My kids are especially fond of this.

    The applications to this berry syrup are endless. You can use it as a much healthier jelly option in a PB and J. I love putting it on top of plain yogurt, so good! “And it tastes great on a crackah!” (You have to say this quote in an British accent, hence crackah. SNL fans out there?). We love to drizzle it on top of our Sourdough Waffles or Kodiac Cakes Copy Cat.

    When I think of eating pancakes, I think of warmth, home, comfort and a full belly. This berry syrup is sure to be a hit in your home as it adds to all of those things that you’re looking for in that perfect breakfast.
